Saturday, August 16th, 1969. Los Angeles, Aug. 16 – William E. Garretson, the only person found alive after the massacre at actress Sharon Tate’s Benedict Canyon estate, yesterday described the murder scene as “horrible,” but could shed no light on the five slayings.
History. In 1969, the Manson Family murdered seven people in a two-day California killing spree. But the night they killed actress Sharon Tate and her friends, they overlooked William Garretson, a 19-year-old Lancaster, Ohio youth who was dogsitting in the guest house 50 yards away.
William Garretson, Altobelli's caretaker and an acquaintance of Parent, lived in the guest house behind the main house and was unaware of the murders until the next morning, when he was taken into custody by police officers who had arrived at the scene. He was later cleared of all charges. [9]
