1 de may. de 2024 · Selenium was used as the photoabsoring layer in the first solid-state solar cell, which was demonstrated by the English physicist William Grylls Adams and his student Richard Evans Day in 1876. Only a few years layer, Charles Fritts fabricated the first thin-film solar cell, also using selenium as the photoabsorber.

Solar cells have also been around since 1884 when Charles Fritts created a device that used gold-coated selenium wafers.

William Grylls Adams and Richard Day, were the first to find that by exposing selenium to day light it produced some electricity. The expense of owning a one watt solar cell was seen in 1956 but the price at the time was to high at $300 dollars.
