Baden-Powell was a son of Baden Powell, Savilian Professor of Geometry at the University of Oxford and Church of England priest, and his third wife, Henrietta Grace Smyth, eldest daughter of Admiral William Henry Smyth.

Upon his return to California, Powell's personal physician conducted tests and found malignant tumors on his neck and chest. [11] The marker on Dick Powell's niche in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California, incorrectly identifies his year of death as 1962. Powell died at the age of 58 on January 2, 1963.
The son succeeded his father in 1941 to the titles of Baronet Baden-Powell and Baron Baden-Powell. Arthur Robert Peter (Peter) , later 2nd Baron Baden-Powell (1913–1962). He married Carine Crause-Boardman in 1936, and had three children: Robert Crause , later 3rd Baron Baden-Powell; David Michael (Michael) , later 4th Baron Baden-Powell and daughter Wendy Dorothy.
