In September 2021, it was announced Winona Ryder, Dermot Mulroney, John Gallagher Jr., Owen Teague and Brianne Tjuhad joined the cast of the film, with Eli Horowitz directing from a screenplay he wrote alongside Matthew Derby.
The film, then titled The Cow, had its world premiere at South by Southwest on March 13, 2022. Shortly after, Vertical Entertainmentacquired distribution rights to the film.
