The Second World War started because the three major expansionist "Axis" powers—Fascist Italy, Nazi Germany, and Imperial Japan—wanted to conquer other countries and build empires. In that respect, one could date the war in Asia back to 1931, when Japan invaded China. Or in Africa, it could be dated to 1935, when Italy invaded Ethiopia.
