Although both Xenia and Alexander were clearly in love, her parents had objections to the potential match. Empress Marie Feodorovna disliked the idea of anyone coming between her and her children.

Grand Duchess Xenia Alexandrovna was the fourth child and first daughter of Alexander III and Maria Fyodorovna. She was born at the Anichkov Palace in St Petersburg on 25 March/6 April 1875. Two days later, Tsarevich Alexander wrote to his father-in-law, King Christian IX of Denmark: “The infant was born at exactly four in the morning, on the day of the celebration of the Annunciation .
