Burgred (also Burhred or Burghred; Old English: Burhræd) was an Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia from 852 to 874. Family. Burgred became king of Mercia in 852, [1] and may have been related to his predecessor Beorhtwulf. [2] . After Easter in 853, Burgred married Æthelswith, daughter of Æthelwulf, king of the West Saxons. [1] .

Burgred was the king of Mercia (from 852/853) who was driven out by the Danes and went to Rome. In 852 or 853 he called upon Aethelwulf of Wessex to aid him in subduing the North Welsh. The request was granted and the campaign proved successful, the alliance being sealed by the marriage of Burgred.

Starting almost immediately after taking the throne, Burgred was forced to ally up with Ethelwulf of Wessex in order to counter attacks from both the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east.
