Hace 2 días · Otto Dix. Painter, printmaker, watercolorist. Known especially for his caustic portraits of postwar German society. Studied in Dresden from 1910 to 1914, where he encountered art of the Brücke and began painting in a colorful, emotionally exaggerated and gestural style.
The buxom Madame Leonie’s heavily made-up face, which borders on garish, brings to life a powerful sense of sexuality. In the early 1920s Otto Dix created a large body of watercolors depicting the prostitutes, wounded soldiers, and performers who were common sights in post-World War I Germany.

He published Dix’s 1924 portfolio of fifty etchings entitled Der Krieg (War), an unflinching depiction of the conflict and its victims. Nierendorf also encouraged Dix to focus on watercolors in 1922 and 1923 during the period of hyperinflation. In 1925, Dix and his wife Martha relocated to Berlin. It was here that he created his iconic portraits.
Now, several previously unknown Dix watercolors have been rediscovered. They were turned up by the Duesseldorf gallery owners Peter Barth and Herbert Remmert while working on an exhibition to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Dix’s birth in 1891.
With its flowing lines and dramatic washes of bright color, Dompteuse is from a series of watercolors which Dix executed in 1922, when he had just arrived in Dresden.
