Although he had only a slight formal education, he read voraciously on his own in a large variety of subjects, including military science, history, and mathematics. To satisfy his interest in learning, he amassed a private library of some 200 volumes.

Within a year, John, chafing under the strict Puritan rules in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, left the colony with Roger Williams to establish Providence Plantations, which later became the Colony of Rhode Island.
