Hearing Wagner conduct in 1849, then attending the premiere of Lohengrin under Liszt in 1850, led him to abandon a career in law: he went to Zürich to become a disciple of Wagner, and gained some conducting experience there before studying with Liszt (whom he greatly impressed) in order to become a concert pianist.
