Since 2004, Choue Chung-won has been the president of World Taekwondo, succeeding the first president, Kim Un-yong. On July 17, 1980, the International Olympic Committee recognized World Taekwondo at its 83rd Session in Moscow, Russia. Taekwondo debuted as a demonstration sport of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

SEOUL, Korea (October 11, 2021) - Chungwon Choue was today re-elected as World Taekwondo President for the term 2021 to 2025 by electronic vote during the virtual World Taekwondo General Assembly 2021. President Choue was the sole Presidential candidate and received 129 of the 131 votes.
