Van Wert County is a county located in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,931. Its county seat is Van Wert. The county was created on February 12, 1820, and later organized on March 18, 1837. It is named for Isaac Van Wart, one of the captors of John André in the American Revolutionary War.

Residents named the county in honor of Isaac Van Wert, a hero of the American Revolution. Van Wert helped capture Benedict Arnold, the most notorious traitor in American history.
Van Wert County is located in Northwest Ohio and has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. It sits on the southern edge of the Great Black Swamp, an area that was known for its rich fur trades in the early days of the United States. It was that fur trade that first brought Europeans to our area.
