The Similaun (German pronunciation: [zimiˈlaʊn] ⓘ) is a mountain in the Schnalskamm group of the Ötztal Alps. It is on the Austrian-Italian border. At 3,606 m, it is Austria's sixth highest summit. It was first ascended in 1834 by Josef Raffeiner and Theodor Kaserer.

Ötzi was found in 1991 in the nearby Schnalstal glacier near the Fineilspitze and the Similaun. The Ötzi monument is located about an hour's walk from the Similaun Hut. Umhausen is the oldest village in the Ötztal area. Sölden as we know it today grew out of 20 buildings in the 13th century AD.

Overview. Similaun is one of the classic glacier mountains of the Ötztal Alps – or perhaps the most classic for some reasons. It is located on the border between Austria and Italy, that means "north and south", "cold and warm", even "beer and wine" and therefore in a very central position.
