History Founding. The British Salem School of Gordonstoun was established in 1934 by Kurt Hahn, a German Jewish educationalist who, after being arbitrarily arrested after the Reichstag fire, fled Nazi Germany. Hahn was asked by friends to give a demonstration in the UK of his "Salem system".

The Archive contains material dating from the 17th century to the present day, including the foundation of the School by Kurt Hahn, its organisation and development.
