It is further categorized in the Lowland East Cushitic sub-group, along with Saho and Somali.[3] Its closest relative is the Saho language.[4] The Afar language is spoken as a mother tongue by the Afar people in Djibouti, Eritrea, and the Afar Region of Ethiopia.[4]

Llingüistes del Institut des Langues de Djibouti , el Ministeriu d'Educación d'Eritrea y el Ethiopian Afar Language Studies & Enrichment Center tán trabayando en desenvolver una versión escrita estandarizada del idioma afar pa facilitar l'alfabetización de los sos falantes.

Xamtanga (Central Agaw; also called Khamir, Khamta) 143,000 speakers in the North Amhara Region. Qimant (Western Agaw) nearly extinct, spoken by the Qemant in Semien Gondar Zone.
