Burgred (also Burhred or Burghred; Old English: Burhræd) was an Anglo-Saxon king of Mercia from 852 to 874. Family. Burgred became king of Mercia in 852, [1] and may have been related to his predecessor Beorhtwulf. [2] . After Easter in 853, Burgred married Æthelswith, daughter of Æthelwulf, king of the West Saxons. [1] .

In 852 or 853 he called upon Aethelwulf of Wessex to aid him in subduing the North Welsh. The request was granted and the campaign proved successful, the alliance being sealed by the marriage of Burgred.

burgred 852 – 874 The last true independent king of Mercia, Burgred’s relatively long reign was blighted by regular Viking invasions. Starting almost immediately after taking the throne, Burgred was forced to ally up with Ethelwulf of Wessex in order to counter attacks from both the Welsh in the west and the Vikings in the east.
