Built in neo-Gothic style, it was originally erected in memoriam of Queen Louise-Marie, wife of King Leopold I, to the design of the architect Joseph Poelaert.
Built by Leopold I, the first king of the then 20-year-old kingdom Belgium, as a mausoleum for his wife Louise of Orléans, the church today holds the tombs of all former Belgian kings and queens.
