Gilbert Burnet (18 September 1643 – 17 March 1715) was a Scottish philosopher and historian, and Bishop of Salisbury. He was fluent in Dutch, French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Burnet was highly respected as a cleric, a preacher, an academic, a writer and a historian.

Gilbert Burnet translated Utopia in 1684 explicitly to update the Ralph Robinson editions into ‘modern’ English. His text became the standard English version for the English-speaking world during the eighteenth century (Thomas Jefferson owned a copy), but Burnet undertook the translation at a moment of political crisis and personal danger.
