Lichtensteig is a municipality in the Wahlkreis (constituency) of Toggenburg in the canton of St. Gallen in Switzerland. History. Lichtensteig was founded by the counts of Toggenburg in the early 13th century, first mentioned in 1228 as Liehtunsteige. [3] . A market is mentioned in 1374, and the right to hold markets is confirmed in 1400. [4] .

Lichtensteig es una comuna suiza del cantón de San Galo, ubicada en el distrito de Toggenburgo. Limita al noreste con la comuna de Oberhelfenschwil, al sur y oeste con Wattwil, y al noroeste con Bütschwil .
Im Mittleren Toggenburg bilden Ebnat-Kappel und Lichtensteig zusammen mit Wattwil – dem eigentlichen Hauptort des Toggenburgs – das Zentrum des Tals. Wattwil ist Einkaufs- und Schulstandort mit der Kantonsschule Wattwil , der Schweizerischen Textilfachschule und dem Berufs- und Weiterbildungszentrum Toggenburg.

Lichtensteig. Founded around 1200 by the Toggenburgers on a rock spur on the Thur. Since 1468 it has belonged to the Abbey of St. Gallen, since 1803 the district capital of Neutoggenburg. The old town has a semicircular shape and was originally protected by a moat and wall.
Other villages are Lichtensteig, Kirchberg and Wattwil. History. There are traces of the paleolithic Mousterian Industry throughout the Appenzell Alps, in the Toggenburg notably in Wildenmannlisloch cave.
