Esico of Ballenstedt (died around 1060) is the progenitor of the House of Ascania, (i.e., the oldest known member of his dynasty). Esico was the count of Ballenstedt (r. 1036-1060), and his possessions became the nucleus of the later Principality of Anhalt.

The earliest known member of the house, Esiko, Count of Ballenstedt, first appears in a document of 1036. He is assumed to have been a grandson (through his mother) of Odo I, Margrave of the Saxon Ostmark. From Odo, the Ascanians inherited large properties in the Saxon Eastern March .
23 de oct. de 2020 · Esico von Ballenstedt is the first named member of the Ascanier family. He appears nine times in contemporary documents between 1036 and 1059, however always only as Graf (comes Hesicho). Only in the 13th century is he called Esicus de Ballenstide by the Annalista Saxo.

Esico (auch Esiko oder Esichos; * um 990 / 1000; † nach 1059, vermutlich 1060) war Graf im Schwaben-, Harz- und Hardagau. Er ist der früheste namentlich bekannte Vorfahre der Askanier .
He was a son of one Count Adalbert, who held the office of a Vogt of Nienburg Abbey, and Hidda, a daughter of Margrave Odo I of the Saxon Ostmark. Esico, whose sister Uta married Margrave Eckard II of Meissen is considered the progenitor of the House of Ascania .
