Selsey Abbey was founded by St Wilfrid in AD 681 on land donated at Selsey by the local Anglo-Saxon ruler, King Æðelwealh of Sussex, Sussex's first Christian king. The Kingdom of Sussex was the last area of Anglo-Saxon England to be evangelised.

Selsey is a small town in West Sussex. The name means "seal island" - although it's been part of the mainland since prehistory, the marshes to the north and west restrict access. These flood at high tide and used to inundate the lane to town, so a ferry plied across the channel.
