The official language of Bulgaria is Bulgarian, which is spoken natively by 85% of the country's population. Other major languages are Russian, Turkish (9.1%), and Romani (4.2%) (the two main varieties being Balkan Romani and Vlax Romani).

Bulgarian is a Southern Slavic language with about 12 million speakers mainly in Bulgaria, but also in Ukraine, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Greece, Romania, Canada, USA, Australia, Germany and Spain. Bulgarian is mutually intelligible with Macedonian, and fairly closely related to Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian and Slovenian.
It is the official language of Bulgaria, and since 2007 has been among the official languages of the European Union. It is also spoken by the Bulgarian historical communities in North Macedonia, Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Albania and Greece.
The history of the Bulgarian language can be divided into three major periods: Old Bulgarian (from the late 9th until the 11th century); Middle Bulgarian (from the 12th century to the 15th century); Modern Bulgarian (since the 16th century). Bulgarian is a written South Slavic language that dates back to the end of the 9th century.
