On this day in 1924, President Calvin and First Lady Grace Coolidge lose their youngest son. The teenager had been under the care of doctors at Walter Reed Army hospital for several days.
By July 7th, Calvin Jr.'s localized infection had developed into full-blown sepsis. As the boy slipped in and out of delirium, Coolidge cradled him in his arms. He died at 10:20 p.m. Some there say that the president was in perfect control of his emotions; others, that he was hysterical, shouting he would soon join his son in death.
