This portrait of Caroline Mathilde is from around 1767, and is therefore one of the earliest portraits we have of her. The picture depicts the young queen about a year after she married the Danish king, Christian VII. It therefore portrays her before she began her famous affair with the king’s personal physician JF Struensee.
Elisabeth Caroline-Mathilde Alexandrine Helena Olga Thyra Feodora Estrid Margarethe Désirée, Princess of Denmark, was born in Copenhagen on 8 May 1935 as the daughter of Prince Knud (Heir Presumptive to the Throne) (1900-1976) and Princess Caroline-Mathilde (1912-1995). Princess Elisabeth passed away on 19 June 2018. Christened and confirmed.
